A few scientists (and a handful of very studious designers) have spent years developing, prototyping, testing materials, stitching them all together, and more to give us shoes that are capable of taking on tricky, wild, rocky, wet, steep, and otherwise technical terrain so you can surefootedly explore.the shoe is the science of body And, to do so in a way that allows everyone from the average jogger to superathletes like the guy who free soloed Yosemite’s El Capitan to move securely and enjoyably, whatever conditions you’re facing.

The shoe is one of the most important objects that we wear, but the way we use shoes is more complex than many people realize.the shoe is the science of body Not only do they make our feet and legs move in specific ways, but they also acquire meanings that can have far-reaching social implications, from determining sex and attractiveness to reinscribing limits on movement and power.

Some of the most important developments in this field have come from the research that’s been done on athletes who go barefoot and minimalist. The most productive outcome of this work has been the recognition that the body works in a wonderfully complex way, and the old biomechanical models that presented the feet and legs as rigid mechanical devices don’t really accurately reflect what happens when we walk or run or climb.

Another recent development comes from the work on running shoes that are designed to help you run faster and more efficiently. A couple of new studies show that the old mechanical tests that are used to rate cushioning in running shoes don’t actually tell you much about what the shoe does when you wear it.

One of these studies showed that the shoes that are designed to be “rocker shoes” – which rock your foot as you run, activating small muscles in your ankles and feet that stabilize balance – do just that. But, after six weeks of wearing them, the swaying diminishes and those stabilizing muscles become weakened, so the benefits are shorter-lived than they might seem.

Similarly, the study on toning shoes found that in the beginning, as the volunteers wore the rocker shoes throughout the day, they wobbled and activated the muscles in their feet and ankles that stabilize balance. But after six weeks of wearing them, the bouncing stopped and those muscles became stronger, so they weren’t as beneficial for the wearer.
