Vibration Shoes For Diabetics
Vibration Shoes For Diabetics
Getting around on unstable terrain or navigating treacherous hills can be dangerous for anyone. But a new smart device called vibration shoes could help people with type 2 diabetes reduce their chances of falling and injuring themselves. The device vibrates the feet of people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and prompts them to move when they're sitting or standing. It's based on research by Wyss Institute and Boston University scientists that has shown that random vibrations, too gentle to be felt, can improve the body's sensory feedback system and restore stability through a mechanism known as stochastic resonance.
In a study of 18 participants with DPN, wearing vibrating insoles reduced center of pressure sway, gait performance, and ankle-foot muscle electromyography amplitude compared to non-vibrating insoles on both foam and firm surfaces, and eyes open and closed.
